ABSTRACT

The research entitled “A Study of dissemination of Thai Theravada Buddhism in the United States of America” was undertaken with the following objectives;

1) to study the history of dissemination of Thai Theravada Buddhism in U.S.A.,

2) to study the roles of the Thai Sangha in disseminating Thai Theravada Buddhism in U.S.A.,

3) to study the impacts of the dissemination of Thai Theravada Buddhism in U.S.A., and

4) to study Buddhists’ opinions towards the overseas going Buddhist missionary monks’ dissemination of Buddhism in U.S.A.

The data were collected from overseas going Buddhist missionary monks and Thai Buddhists in U.S.A. by using the questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed by content analysis.

It was found that the overseas going Thai Buddhist missionary monks still have the qualifications which are not in accord with the situations of disseminating Buddhism in U.S.A., especially those qualifications in terms of administration and management and working process such as leadership. vision, and planning and decision-making process.

Concerning the Thai Buddhist missionary monks’ roles, it was found that the Thai people in U.S.A. have accepted their roles. However, those Thai people have felt that the Thai Buddhist missionary monks have not yet played the roles assigned to them as well as possible. Such a feeling was also found with the Thai Buddhist missionary monks. When evaluating the consensus of the opinions between Thai Buddhists and Buddhist missionary monks, it was found that there must be a need to develop the Thai Buddhist missionary monks’ ability to communicate in English which may have resulted in playing the poor role among the American people and the foreigners in U.S.A. as well.
