ABSTRACT

The research aimed at studying the practices towards the doctrine and the discipline as well as social duties of the Buddhist monks in Nakhon Ratchasima and comparing the practices as perceived by the Nakhon Ratchasima Buddhist monks with different Buddhist monkhood ages, different educational qualifications in general knowledge section, Dhamma section, and Pali section. The research sample group was the 975 stretified Buddhist monks in Nakhon Ratchasima with their Buddhist monkhood ages over 1 year. The instrument used in the data collection was a checklist interview with 35 items assessing the practices towards the doctrine and the discipline of the Buddhist monks in Nakhon Ratchasima. The other was a multiple choice interview with 30 items assessing the social duties of those monks. The data was collected by the researcher and his teamwork employing frequency distribution, percentage and Chi-Square in the data analysis. The research finding was as follows :

1. Regarding the practices towards the doctrine and the discipline of the Buddhist monks in Nakhon Ratchasima, the following items were said to be the most complete practices :

1.1 In terms of moral discipline as regards the fundamental percepts, believe and trust in Buddha’s preaching, not to create disagreement among Buddhist monks, and not to be self – assertive were said to be the most complete practices.

1.2 In terms of the discipline as regards the sense – restraint, having concentration when eating, listening, and preaching focused on content – based rather than being fun, were said to be the most complete practices.

1.3 In terms of the discipline as regards the purity of livelihood, to abstain from deceiving others to gain benefit, to abstain from unreasonable requests from others, and to abstain from seeking illegal gain and diginity were said to be the most complete practices.

1.4 In terms of the discipline as regards the four requisites, to consider correct medicine appropriate to cure such disease when getting sick and to use suitable lodgings for living and necessity were said to be the most complete practices.

2. Regarding the practices towards social duties of the Buddhist monks in Nakhon Ratchasima, the following items were said to be the most frequent practices :

2.1 In terms of Dhamma dissemination, being good models in moral self – behaviour, Dhamma presentation on Dhamma days and religious traditional days were said to be the most frequent practices.

2.2 In terms of educational assistance, participating in supporting students and citizens to Dhamma study and Dhamma examination at different levels was said to be the most frequent practice.

2.3 In terms of public assistance or community development, participating in facilitating citizens to make merit and participating in organizing donation for helping the needed were said to be the most frequent practices.

2.4 In terms of public benefit, environmental and cultural preservation, participating in making temple areas to be clean, peaceful, cool and appropriate to religious practices and participating in the renovation of temple lodgings were said to be the most frequent.

3. Nakhon Ratchasima Buddhist monks, with different ranks, different monkhood ages, different educational backgrounds in general knowledge section, Dhamma section, and Bali section, showed different perception towards the social duty practices of the Buddhist monks in Nakhon Ratchasima at the .05 level of statistically significant difference.
