Research Title : The Image of Buddhist Institutions Perceived by The Buddhists in Nakhon Ratchasima

ABSTRACT
The research aimed at studying and comparing the image of Buddhist institutions, perceived by Buddhists who were students and citizens living in Nakhon Ratchsima, regarding religious personnel (Buddhist monks and novices), religious lodgings (Buddhist temples), religious traditions (Buddhist ceremonies), and religious Dhamma (Buddhist sermons). Moreover, the sexes, ages, different levels of education, hometowns, and participation in religious activities of the students and the citizens were focussed.
The research sample group comprised of 1943 Buddhists, who were over 12 years old and living in Nakhon Ratchasima in 2004. The sample group was categorized into 995 citizens and 948 students. This number was said to be 97.15% of the total number of the set sample. Stratified random sampling was used in selecting the sample group so as to cover the areas and variables of the study. The 5 rating scale questionnaire with 34 items, constructed by the teamwork, was used in the data collection. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, and F-test were employed in the data analysis.
The findings of the research revealed that
1. Regarding the image of Buddhist institutions as perceived by the students and citizens in Nakhon Ratchasima, it was perceived to be at the high level in all aspects. The aspect relating to religious Dhamma was perceived to be the highest whereas the aspect relating to religious personnel was perceived to be the lowest. When specifically considered in terms of religious personnel, being venerable persons was perceived to be the highest. In terms of religious lodgings, being places for Buddhist religious activities and traditions was perceived to be the highest. In terms of religious traditions, being believable and venerable as perceived by the students to be the highest whereas being holy Buddhist activities and traditions was perceived by the citizens to be the highest. In terms of religious Dhamma, being calm and peaceful, venerable-minded was perceived to be the highest.
2. The citizens and the students in Nakhon Ratchasima showed different image of Buddhist institutions in terms of religious Dhamma.
3. Regarding the comparison of the image of Buddhist institutions, as perceived by the students and considering various variables, it yielded that
3.1 Regarding the religious personnel, students with different hometowns and studies showed different perception in the image of Buddhist institutions.
3.2 Students differently engaging in offering food to Buddhist monks, donating money and things to Buddhist temples, and participating in religious activies and traditions, showed different perception in the image of Buddhist institutions.
3.3 Students differently participating in Buddhist preaching activities showed different perception in the image of Buddhist institutions in Nakhon Ratchasima in two aspects-religious personnel and religious lodgings.
3.4 Students differently participating in Buddhist sermon listening showed different perception in the image of Buddhist institutions in three aspects-religious personnel, religious traditions, and religious Dhame.
3.5 Students differently participating in Buddhist religious pracetices showed different perception in the image of Buddhist institutions in two aspects-religious personnel and religious lodgings.
4. Regarding the comparison of the image of Buddhist institutions, as perceived by the citizens, and considering various variables, it yielded that
4.1 Citizens showed different perception in the image of Buddhist perception in three aspects-religious personnel, religious lodgings, and religious traditions.
4.2 Citizens living inside and outside the municipal areas showed different perception in the image of Buddhist institutions in three aspects-religious personnel, religious lodgings, and religious in three aspects-religious personnel, religious traditions, and religious Dhama.
4.3 Citizens with different ages showed different perception in the image of Buddhist institutions in the aspects-religious personnel, religious traditions, an religious Dhama.
4.4 Citizens with different education levels, different engaging in offering food to the monks, participating and Buddhist preaching activities, sermon listening, religious practices, donating money or things to the temples, organizations and the needed, as well as different participating in religious activities, showed different perception and the image of Buddhist institutions in all aspects.
