ABSTRACT

This research program was a descriptive research undertaken to study moral resonating and moral attitudes of Primary school students and secondary school students regarding the following of moral characteristics: loving kindness – compassion, self sacrifice, responsibility, honesty, discipline, patience, harmony, politeness, respectfulness of others right, economy, and environment.

A study of Moral Reasoning and Moral Attitudes of Primary and Secondary School Students.

The samples of this study were 226 6th grade primary school students from all primary schools under educational office, Pathumwan District, and 353 secondary schools students, 10th grade, from 3 secondary schools under the office of Bangkok educational region 3. These samples were selected by cluster sampling. The research tools were the constructed tests on moral reasoning and moral attitudes scales for primary and secondary schools students. The statistics used for analysis of data were percentage, mean, and standard deviation.

It was found the majority of 6th grade primary school students have moral reasoning of stage 4 and 5 respective according to Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development. On the average, they are found to be at the 4th stage of moral reasoning which is the stage oriented to abiding by the law and responding to the obligations of duty.

Concerning moral attitudes, it was found that the majority of primary school students, grade 6th indicated ‘undecided’ and ‘agreed’ respectively. On the average, they indicated ‘undecided’ with statements ( =3.48)

For secondary school students, grade 10, on the average, they are found to be at the stage 5 of moral reasoning which is stage oriented to social contract. Concerning moral attitudes, on the average, they indicated an agreement with the statements. ( =3.65)
